"The next few months are going to be quite a ride. And I think we're all going to learn something about ourselves in the process." - Buffy the Vampire Slayer
It's been awhile since I've posted anything on this particular blog. I've been blogging over here and here and let this site become less of a priority.
I choose today's quote for two reasons. First because I am coming back to the beginning, to my first blog. There's some pretty interesting stuff in here I forgot about and lots of antidotes from life in the Nevada Legislature. Feel free to look around. Second, because I have been reading Shift. (Three times before Thanksgiving) Right now, in this market, it's all about doing the things that matter most, going back to the beginning.
Dana did a class earlier this week that was on how to Focus Like a SEAL. Hands down, it was the best class I have attended in a while. The information wasn't new, something just clicked. My biggest aha was when they said to focus on the small victories...step by step. Focus on this phone call, this appointment, this task. That to me was HUGE. I get so tied up in everything that has to be done for the day that I don't focus on anything and nothing gets done. What I also got out of the class was to not only set your intentions for the day, but at the end of the day, do a debrief. Hold yourself accountable for what you did or didn't do that day.
Everyday has new beginnings...what will be yours today?

I know, I know...I haven't posted in a while. I've been posting on myspace because more people comment and strangely enough it seems more secure. On myspace I can totally control who sees what and that's appealing to me. But I'm back. I promise to post at least once a week and the posts on this site will probably end up being more on the professional bent then personal info or rantings. For those you are going to have to be my friend on myspace.
Anyway for my first post back I am letting you know that it's time for the bi-annual Nevada State Legislature Triva Contest. For those of you who participated last year, I'm going to make it about the same level of difficulty, if not a bit easier. I'll have it posted today, so stay tuned.

Serenity
I was searching Amazon today and look what I can across...
[as Serenity descends toward planetside, a large piece breaks off of the nose with a loud bang and goes sailing past the front windscreen] [jumping, startled]
Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: What was that?
[incredulous] Hoban 'Wash' Washburn: Did you see that?
Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: Was that the primary buffer panel?
Hoban 'Wash' Washburn: It did seem to resemble ...
Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: Did the primary buffer panel just fall off my gorramn ship for no apparent reason?
[Another loud bang] Hoban 'Wash' Washburn: Looks like! [hitting switches] Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: I thought Kaylee just checked the entry couplings! I have a very specific memory of ...
Hoban 'Wash' Washburn: Well, if she doesn't give me more power from the engine room to offset the burnthrough, this landing could get pretty interesting.
Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: Define "interesting".
[shrugging] Hoban 'Wash' Washburn: "Oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die"?
Fun Facts from IMDb.com:
Universal Studios took the unusual step of allowing early previews of the unfinished film. The 5 May 2005 previews were held in 10 cities, the 26 May 2005 previews were held in 20 cities, and the 23 June 2005 previews were held in 35 cities. An early preview was also held on the Gold Coast, Qld, Australia on Friday 22 July 2005
Two wrecked ships are shown with the registration numbers C57D, a reference to Forbidden Planet. Jayne points out the first one as they explore. The second is the rescue ship, the source of the beacon.
A coffee maker seen in Serenity's dining room/kitchen is an F.A. Porsche Design coffee maker made by Siemens.
The futuristic-looking handcuffs used on River are in fact Clejuso Number 13s, the second heaviest handcuffs currently in production.
When the Operative reviews Mal's file, it shows his Date of Birth as 9/20/2468. 9/20/2002 is the day Firefly premiered.
The keyboard Mal uses to transmit the signal from Mr. Universe's basement is a Micro Innovations Web Office Pro Keyboard.
One of the video clips playing on the monitors in Mr Universe's base is the Blue Sun commercial from the Firefly: The Series episode "The Message".
This is the first film for which a digital cinema distribution master was made using the new DCI standards using JPEG2000 compression and a 12 bit 4:4:4 XYZ color space.
During the intro scene, the teacher says in Mandarin, "Please, quiet down a bit."
Goofs
When the Operative is reviewing Mal's file, Mal's first name is first shown spelled "Malcom", then "Malcolm".
During the vault scene on some shots you can see there is no left wall to the set and the sound stage wall can be seen beyond the set.
After Jayne passes to Simon the Blue Sun jug of booze, and Simon picks up to drink, the label has rotated away from the viewer.
A security camera feed shows Mal and Jayne sitting down at a table with Fanty and Mingo before they enter the bar (before the dialog between Mal and Kaylee).
SPOILER: When the dying Shepherd Book removes his blood covered hand from Mal's face, there is no blood left on Mal's cheek, but there is smudged blood in the next shots.Crazy Credits
As the last of the credits roll, a solitary guitar plays the theme song ofthe original TV show, "Firefly".
The film content begins seamlessly from the Universal logo. After the'Universal' title appears over the earth icon, the earth image becomes morerealistic, and then the word 'Universal' is moved away to leave earth, withspacecraft departing, as the first 'regular' shot of the film.
There is a message in the closing credits: "The filmmakers wish to thankthe crew and staff of 'Firefly'"
Movie Connections
Follows: Firefly: The Series
Spin off from: Firefly: The Series
References: Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man Forbidden Planet Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope

Kind of cool, huh?
Now all of you need to go out and buy Serenity the DVD and the series boxset of Firefly. You'll love it, I promise. :)

Happy National Hangover Day!
Hope you all had a safe and happy New Year. I want to hear all about what you all did, but in the meantime here are a few suggestions to pass the read of the long weekend.
~ Catch up on your reading. I made a serious dent in my pile today by reading Jennifer Crusie's Anyone But You and the new Berkley anthology The Naked Truth.
~ Watch some really brainless movies. Something like Clueless, Young Frankenstein or really anything played on Comedy Central.
~ Eat insane amounts of junk food. Greasy, junky food are always the best solution for the massive hangover that is the direct result of your New Years Bing. Unless of course your resolution is to get healthy and/or go on a diet, then you can just starve that hangover out of your system. (but if you do succumb to the intense craving for hamburgers and Dr. Pepper at least you made it the 10 - 12 hours you were sleeping.)
~ Sleep. This one needs to be done in moderation. National Hangover Day is meant for brainless activity not total unconsciousness.
truly, the best way to pass the weekend is to indulge in all four so go for it, have fun, and try not to leave the couch!

My Cat
What I'm Reading
Over the past week, I have had a few of my friends ask me what I'm reading, so in the interest of saving time, I'll just post my list for you all to enjoy.
Wicked by Gregory Maguire. I have just finished reading this one and it was great. It's the story of the life of the Wicked Witch of the West and how she really wasn't so bad, just didn't conform to society.
Blue Smoke by Nora Roberts. As always, her books are fabulous. It's the story of a girl who after fire threaten to destroy her family, grow up to become an arson investigator.
The Undomesticated Goddess by Sophie Kinsella. I just started this book today, but I loved her Can you Keep a Secret so I'm looking forward to this new release.
Vanish by Tess Gerritsen. This was so good and yet another Jane Rizzoli escapade. If you like Eve Dallas, you'll like Jane Rizzoli. She's a rough around the edges cop who always catches her man. I couldn't put it down.
'Til There Was U by Dianne Castell. This was the first book from Castell that I've read, but I enjoyed it thoroughly. This particular book is the first in a trilogy of three brothers who come home to help their father with his newest addition. It's a fun light read.

Quotations
So I was floating around on my space today and one of the posts I came across caught my attention.
Can you guess the movie just by a quote? (There are some people who possess the talent.) Let's test how good you are. Guess the movie where the quote is from, then post your own favorite quote for the next person.
Here's my quote to get us started.
"What an idiot." (Said in an English accent)
(For a bonus, a TV quote - "Us two? You two are the two who are the two!)

Top Ten Reasons Why I Hate Fox
10.) Major League Baseball interrupts primetime. (Isn't this what the many sports only channels are for or better yet WGN)
9.) There primetime lineup is mostly geared to the MTV crowd.
8.) Prime time only lasts 2 hours. (Probably because they keep canceling their primetime shows.)
7.) Thrives on shows like Trading Spouses.
6.) Uses Cops to fill programming gaps at all hours of the day.
5.) Has one high rated show and encores it every week.
4.) MAD T.V. (Do I really need to say more)
3.) Hasn't cancelled Stacked.
2.) They cancelled Kitchen Confidential after 13 episodes (However, only 4 got to air before the show was preempted for baseball)
1.) They cancelled Firefly after 13 episodes (Do we see a pattern emerging?)

Harry Potter
The new Harry Potter movie premiers on the 18th and I can't wait. To tide me over for the midnight premiere at the IMAX, there is going to be an online webcast that will run simultaneously with the real premiere in England! It's going to be tomorrow at 9am my time. (You all can figure out the time difference yourselves) I can't wait, I am so excited!
